Women who suffer osteoporosis face almost double the risk of developing sudden deafness compared with those who do not have the bone disease, say researchers.
They believe the underlying processes that lead to rapidly thinning bones are also affecting other systems in the body.Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), also called sudden deafness, is an unexplained, rapid loss of hearing that typically happens in one ear.It can happen at once or over the course of several days. during which sound is gradually muffled or reduced.
About half of the people who develop SSHL will spontaneously regain their hearing, but it is important to seek treatment immediately as steroid drugs may help.
About 85 per cent of those who are treated for the condition recover some hearing, but the remainder have hearing loss that continues to worsen.Study author Dr Kai-Jen Tien, of the Chi Mei Medical Center, Taiwan, said: ‘A growing body of evidence indicates that osteoporosis affects not only bone health, but the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems,‘Our findings suggest sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) can be another broader health problem connected to osteoporosis.’Altogether 2.3 million women over the age of 50 in the UK have osteoporosis. Older women are more at risk of osteoporosis because the rate of bone loss is accelerated by the menopause.
At least one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 have a lifetime risk of suffering a break as a result of poor bone health.
Every year there are 89,000 hip fractures linked to osteoporosis which cost the UK ?6 million a day in health and social costs. The study examined medical records for 10,660 Taiwan residents who were diagnosed with osteoporosis between 1999 and 2008.
These were compared them to 31,980 people who did not have the condition, says a report in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Using national insurance records, the researchers analysed how many participants were diagnosed with sudden deafness by the end of 2011.Those who were diagnosed with osteoporosis had a 1.76 higher risk of developing sudden sensorineural hearing loss than the group without thinning bones.
Among those with osteoporosis, 91 were diagnosed with SSHL during the follow-up period.
In comparison, the control group, which was triple the size, included 155 people who were diagnosed with SSHL.Researchers aren’t sure what biological mechanism is responsible for the relationship.Dr Tien said it was possible that a number of risk factors connected with disorders including cardiovascular problems, bone demineralisation, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction may play a part.He said: ‘More people worldwide are suffering from osteoporosis, and our work shows they are at risk of sensorineural hearing loss as well as bone fracture and other problems.
‘Patients who have osteoporosis should be aware they need to seek medical help immediately if they experience hearing loss.’The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) charity, of which Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is president after seeing her mother and grandmother suffer from the disease, campaigns for earlier diagnosis of the disorder.
