Cases of syphilis and incurable strains of gonorrhoea soar as STI experts warn new figures are 'just the tip of the iceberg'

A sharp rise in cases of syphilis and gonorrhoea could be just the tip of the iceberg with young people and gay men the most likely to be affected, experts have today warned.

New Public Health England figures reveal cases of deadly syphilis jumped 33 per cent in total, with a 47 per cent surge among gay men.

And gonorrhoea diagnoses rose by 19 per cent overall, with a 32 per cent increase among men who have sex with men (MSM).

Experts representing sexual health charities have welcomed a small decrease in overall rates, but warned these figures could represent the tip of the iceberg.

Though welcoming the slight fall in the total number of STIs, Natika Halil, chief executive of the Family Planning Association, cautioned the true number of people suffering an STI is unknown.

She said: 'Although there has been a slight decrease in the overall number of diagnoses, we are still talking about a high number of infections.

'And we don't know the true number of STIs that people have which have not been diagnosed, and which can be passed on.'

Reducing the spread of STIs must remain a public health priority, Dr Gwenda Hughes, head of STI surveillance at PHE said, as she raised particular concern over rates recorded among gay men.

Dr Hughes, said: 'The stats published today show that too many people are getting STIs.

'Reducing this spread must be a public health priority. We are particularly concerned about the large rises in diagnoses among gay men.'

Ms Halil, echoed those concerns. She added: 'It is also concerning that young people under 25 and men who have sex with men continue to be disproportionately affected by STIs.

'There is a very clear need for local authorities to prioritise sexual health and ensure there is easy and equal access for people across the country to information, advice, testing and treatment services, regardless of their age or location.'

Both Dr Hughes and Ms Halil agree better education of young people is vital in stopping the spread of all STIs.

Ms Halil branded the information available to young people now as 'inadequate'.

'Learning about safer sex, the importance of barrier methods of contraception, and understanding what it means to be in a healthy relationship with consent and negotiation, are all crucial elements in a wider package of sex and relationships education that should be statutory,' she said.

'It is really important that people remember safer sex involves using condoms correctly every time you have sex.

'If you don’t use a condom you are more at risk of getting a sexually transmitted infection and it's a myth that you need to have lots of sexual partners to get an infection.'

Dr Hughes added: 'Health promotion and education to increase risk awareness and encourage safer sexual behaviour remain the cornerstones of STI prevention.'

In addition, she said access to sexual health services and STI screening is another 'vital component' in stemming the spread.

'Effective commissioning is critical to improving STI prevention,' she said.

'Prevention work should continue to focus on people in the groups at highest risk of infection, such as young people and gay men.'
